Eden dragged herself through her shift, and no amount of sweet tea or coffee shook her exhaustion. She’d been spending her limited free time with Dominic, meeting up late at night, and while she loved seeing him, she’d lost precious hours of sleep. She’d also been visiting with his grandmother and his mother, who’d extended her stay a couple of days while they made arrangements for Heidi. Spin it all together and a bone-deep tiredness sank over her.

Though her manager didn’t like when she used her phone while on shift, Eden had tucked her phone into her apron. Eden received a text from Dominic asking her to stop by his place after her shift, and she responded.

I’m too tired. I’m closing tonight. I’m sorry.

If she rushed out and skipped anything on her manager’s closing checklist, she’d pay for it. Missing her shift a few days before had irritated him enough, and he didn’t forgive and forget easily. She was still angling for a chance to work on the restaurant’s Fourth of July celebration, and that missed shift counted against her.

She couldn’t leave Caroline with Lucy overnight, and if she snuck over to Dominic’s, she’d have to drive home early in the morning, cutting short her sleep and interrupting Lucy’s as well.

His reply came almost immediately. Please? I miss you.

Eden glanced around the restaurant at her remaining tables. A couple eating dessert, another group who would likely move to the bar to finish out the night, and a trio of friends who were still ordering food and drinks. Two more hours before she could leave. She could maybe convince someone else to close for her, but sleep ranked as a valuable commodity.

Could she push herself harder? Her eyes were heavy, her feet ached, and her lower back was sore. Sleep sounded like heaven, but the temptation to see Dominic erased some of the aches and pains from her exhausted body.

Before she could reply, her eyes fell on Dominic. He was leaning on the edge of the bar, watching her. His dark gaze seared into her. He’d come from work, his gray tie loose around his neck and his white shirtsleeves rolled to the elbows.

One of her tables called to her, but she ignored the summons and strode straight to Dominic. Unbearably handsome, he drew her, beckoned to her without speaking a word.

“You’re persistent,” she said.

“I spoke to your manager. Someone else will cover the rest of your shift and close. They’ve been generously compensated for the inconvenience.”

A couple of hours in his arms instead of on her feet. She could get used to this. “You didn’t have to do that. People will think I’m lazy. And my manager agreed to that?”

He quirked a brow at her. “No one in their right mind thinks you’re lazy, and there’s nothing to worry about. I even apologized for making you miss your shift when you were helping with my grandmother. Your boss didn’t seem clear that it was a family emergency. I made sure he was clear.
